Upcoming Class
Improvisational Quilting typically means to “piece without a pattern” rather than following another quilter’s instructions, design elements, and/or color choices. Instead, you make up your project as you go, energized by your own impulses and inspired by work you have seen and loved. But even the most famous practitioners don’t sit down at a machine and say “anything goes.” They work within constraints they set for themselves, narrowing the field of creative choices, and in doing so, spur inspiration while overcoming the inertia of the “blank page.”
In this class we will limit our choices by size, color, and shape. By the end of the day, you will have an 18” x 18” square that you can use to make a tote bag, a pillow, multiple notecards, as the foundation for a larger project such as a wall hanging, or any other piece you can imagine. We will explore how to use color contrast to good effect and various ways to arrange pieced units to create the most pleasing compositions. No previous experience with improvisational quilting is necessary, but successful participants will keep themselves open to working without a pattern and bring a willingness to break familiar quilting rules. There are many ways to quilt improvisationally. This class will set you on a path to discovering which strategies work for you.
